To the editor:

I do not think that the Social Security system needs tinkering with. It appears to me that it is only another way to route the managed money of the people into private pockets.

I am not an expert on the matter but it seems the main argument is that the 'Baby Boomer' generation is larger than what the working generation will be able to support. This may be true but are all the immigrants being taken into consideration. Obviously if the country's working force cannot be replaced with native people it will take no more effort than to relax immigration quotas to fill the jobs. People risk their life to get to this country every day. (Maybe what we have is not too bad?)

How is the privatization plan going to deal with the insurance aspect of Social Security? They seem to be silent in this area. If the breadwinner in the family dies or is otherwise unable to work they or their family are eligible for assistance under the current system. Shouldn't this be taken into consideration? Of course this is the messy side of life and not nice to look at but never the less a reality.

Does the government see 'STUPID' written on my face? Why should I believe that putting my (or my son's and grandchildren's) retirement income into business investments is a wise choice. Was ENRON just a fluke? I know we made an example out of Martha but "HELLO PEOPLE, we have not eliminated corruption from government let alone business."

I have to admit that the US Social Security system is not perfect but it is not broken and by most honest estimates not in danger either. There are a lot bigger fish to fry in this day and age than worrying about all that money in Social Security. I for one am all for a mandate to replace fossil fuels for energy. How about working on ending world hunger and genocide and the list goes on. After all it is 2005.

Sincerely,

Bill Konz

It's clear that the biggest problem Social Security faces today is the fact that the Bush Administration is trying to dismantle it. You can help stop that. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper and spread the word: George W. Bush is planning to cut everyone's Social Security benefits. Unfortunately, this is just the first battle in a much larger war. You can help stop them from achieving their ultimate goal privatization by saying "no" and acting today.
